So it's safe to say that wherever you may reside, one of these options is open to you. Skateboarding, surfing, or snowboarding. And I think it's saft to say that everyone has thought of picking up one of the activities at one time or another? I certainly have.
I am a firm believer that it is never to late to try anything and to hopefully put that spark into anyone that comes across this, here are 3 amazing, beautiful, badass women (aka: normal women, like you and me!) who really rocked. Enjoy!
SURF: MARGE CALHOUN
This gal really made it possible for a lot of women to get into surfing after her. She really made waves (ha!) in the surf scene of the 50's and 60's. Not only her, but her two lovely daughters!
Marge was born in 1926 and raised in Hollywood. She had her first daughter Candy in 1945 and her second daughter Robin in '47. And she didn't even start surfing until 1955 at the age of 29! She really got into it when she was spending some time surfing in Hawaii with her pal Eve. She entered the Makaha International at the age of 32 and won! (That's a big deal by the way).
She continued to make a name for herself and her daughters in the 60's. You can find awesome photos of the three of them strolling up and down the beach with boards in hand.
SKATE: ELLEN O' NEAL DEASON
So I'm sure you've probably come across these pics on the interwebs at one point. This lady really made an impact in the 70's for women who wanted to skate.
Ellen started skating when she was 15, as a way to get around while doing her paper route. She saved her hard earned dough and put it towards a better board and entered a freestyle skating contest. Being one of very few women in the competition, she got 2nd place!
This past May she was (finally!) inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. She has a 23 yr old son, and loves riding her Harley. :)
What a lovely life to have, no?
SNOWBOARD: LAURA HADAR
I gotta say it was hella hard to find ANY info on snowboarding woman out there. Except for the hundreds of "Top 10 Hottest/Sexiest women in blah blah blah" which was a huge disappointment. But I remembered coming across a pretty neat interview with this gal a little while back.
Laura Hadar is from Carbondale, CO and currently resides in Salt Lake City. In her interview she mentioned the reason she started snowboarding was because it just looked cool (!That's awesome!), she smokes (!That's awesome!), and you can find videos of her freaking snowboarding down a freaking mountain! (!Um so awesome!).
Sadly she recently retired due to lack of sponsorship, which makes me want to cry. She is a badass.
***********************
These women all have such vastly different backgrounds and stories and it just goes to show that you should never be afraid to try something new and scary. No matter where you are or how old you are, you can do it. Never mind the naysayers everybody!
Here's even more convincing that you should just go ahead and spend that tax refund on that surf lesson you were thinking of.
Peace!

Tassel everything you own.
TASSELS!
Been seeing a lot of tassel jewelry out there which makes me so very happy. Although most of it has been on the subtle side. Lots of chain tassels and minimalist pieces. Which don't get me wrong is still super cute, but it certainly doesn't have enough pop for me. There is hope though! See that necklace on the left side of my lil photo collage? That's $12.90 at F21 right now. And that necklace on the right? That's from an amazing little Etsy shop called Mimoza, based in Budapest. It's over $80, but hell, that is a piece I would cherish for a LONG time. And don't forget that making a tassel is like the easiest thing in the world. Make a tassel now! Think of all the possibilites! Pillows, scarves, blankets, jewelry, dogs, cats, your mom, meatballs. I mean, you can tassel freaking everything! Get crackin.
Peace!
